Good to Great is an excellent book — I think everyone in business needs to read it. According to Mr Collins (and he’s done the research — identifying the traits that made 11 companies great compared to over 1400 others over a 40 year period), there are 2 ways you can go.

1 of those ways might make you good — the other will make you great. The ancient Greek poet Archilocus wrote,

The fox knows many things; the hedgehog one great thing.

Foxes are cunning, curious and know a lot of different little tricks — but a hedgehog only needs to know that if it curls up in a ball and waits long enough, it can beat any opponent.

Like the hedgehog, the truly great companies painstakingly examined themselves to work out the 1 guiding principle, the 1 thing they could be truly great at, and relentlessly pursued it.
