Have you ever thought that you might be striving for average?
Most people, especially when pushed, will do what they think is the most achievable. We think that audacious goals are more risky, because fewer people get there. Every time you achieve mediocrity, you reinforce that idea.
Maybe the opposite is actually true. Maybe there’s less competition for the biggest dreams. Could it be that all those people downgrading their goals to something more “reasonable” are all clamouring for the same space and making those average dreams harder to reach?
Tim Ferris thinks average goals create a vacuum at the top — and for those willing to break the mould, often times the things that seem the hardest are actually easier, because no-one else is doing them.
